HOW ARGOS

repeatedly broke the trade descriptions act!

By Chris Thomlinson.

One of, if not the, fundamental articles/exposés this internet news magazine just loves getting its razor sharp teeth into, is wrongdoing! In particular, wrongdoing by big business, while I speak from my own experience.

Two years ago, I had cause to move home. I took all of but two items of furniture with me, a bed and a cooker, the two main items we all need – something to sleep on and an appliance for cooking the food we need to eat.

I looked through the Argos catalogue, which I still have, and picked out a Belling cooker, Hygena bed and mattress, all of which, according to the Argos catalogue, were available for ‘Next day delivery’. See purple delivery van symbol in these 3 scans from the Argos catalogue of 2017:

When I went to my local Argos to purchase the three items, I was told they would take 10 days, despite the ‘next day delivery’ indication in the catalogue. I was informed that, for next day delivery, I needed to order them on-line; via their website.

Having moved into my new flat, and bought a bed and cooker from elsewhere, I decided to test the next day delivery service. I ordered a 2 seater sofa, again, advertised as next day delivery:

Yet again, and despite the purple sign saying 'Next day Delivery', I was informed that I would have to wait 10 days for it to be delivered. A clear breach of the Trade descriptions act, while I have e-mails from Argos confirming that.

So, if you or anyone you know are intending to buy something from Argos that has to be delivered, be prepared to wait 10 days, irrespective of what it says in the Argos catalogue, in particular, ‘Next day delivery’. Ultimately, Argos lied and continue to lie about ‘Next day delivery’, while I’m sure the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) would equally like to get their teeth into Argos over ‘false advertising’.

Footnote: Having published this 26 years update of the original printed TRUTH from and since 1994 to the internet, the TRUTH will be contacting, by e-mail, one or more of those named in this article. Specifically, the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority).
